2 Long Island Catholic Schools To Close In 2019

The schools are closing due to a large decline in enrollment.

Two Catholic elementary schools on Long Island will close at the end of the 2019 school year due to a sharp decline in enrollment, the Diocese of Rockville Centre announced on Thursday.

All Saints Regional School in Glen Cove and St. Joseph School in Ronkonkoma will close in June.

"This was a difficult decision— one that was made after much thought and prayer," Kathleen Walsh, Superintendent of Schools at the Diocese, said in a statement. "My department will assist parents and students in the process of selecting and transferring to any Catholic elementary school within our diocese."

According to the Diocese, enrollment has declined by 27 percent at All Saints Regional over the past five years. St. Joseph saw a 31 percent decrease in enrollment during that time. Income from tuition and fundraising has also declined, causing the diocese and parish to provide more financial support.

Both schools enroll students from nursery to eighth grade.

"Rigorous review of the impact of declining enrollment on each school's financial health by parish and diocesan leadership, has made it clear that it is not feasible to maintain them financially," the Diocese said in a statement.
