Meals On Wheels Thanksgiving Fundraiser Flourishes

Meals on Wheels’ annual Share a Piece of the Pie Program exceeded last year’s sales by almost 50 percent. The Nanuet-based not-for-profit organization sells Thanksgiving holiday pies to individuals and businesses, which distribute them to employees and/or clients. Each pie sold helps to provide a holiday meal for a homebound individual in Rockland County.

Meals On Wheels Chairman of the Board Stan Schwarz said, “This year was a record for us.  We sold 1,785 pies of which 133 were designated to be donated to seniors in need.  Last year we sold 1,200 pies.”

Schwarz said deliveries of the pumpkin, sweet potato, apple, pecan and chocolate cream pies began Monday morning and will continue through until Wednesday morning. The staff, board members and volunteers are working together and dedicating their time to delivering the pies. Orders of 12 or more pies to a single address in Rockland were delivered at no additional charge while smaller orders were picked up at Meals on Wheels.

It administers five senior centers, an adult day care center, central commissary, computer learning lab, and an all-senior theatrical troupe known as The Music Makers. The Agency is also in the process of establishing a Pet Pantry for seniors who cannot afford to feed their pets.
