HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Thunderstorms Friday could bring excessive rainfall to the already saturated region, and the National Weather Service has issued hazardous outlooks.

There is a slight risk of excessive rainfall and a marginal risk for isolated severe thunderstorms.

There is uncertainty with the exact timing and extent of the severe thunderstorm threat and exact timing and location of the heaviest rainfall, which would affect where flooding takes place and to what extent.

"Those storms may be slower moving, and could touch off flash flooding if the heavy rains train over the same areas. This could be any time from late morning through the afternoon on Friday," said Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather.

For Dutchess and Ulster counties, showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected through mid-morning with brief heavy downpours and frequent lightning. There is a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening. Isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible, which could produce localized damaging wind gusts and large hail. In addition, locally heavy rainfall is possible and could result in minor flooding.

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms could cause scattered areas of flash flooding in Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties. "Excessive runoff may result in flashier small streams, rivers, and creeks rising out of their banks, especially across areas that have been impacted by significant flooding over the last week plus," the NWS said.

Rain could fall as fast as 1-2 inches an hour. The region could get 0.5 to 1.25 inches, with localized amounts of 2 to 3 inches possible.

Isolated damaging wind gusts are also possible.
