A layer of cool, dense air in the lower part of the atmosphere will act as a wall separating us from the people sweltering in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

"This boundary separating temperatures in the 50s and 60s from readings in the 70s, 80s and near 90 will extend from northern New York to the Hudson Valley southward to the immediate coast of the mid-Atlantic," said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

The heavy, gusty thunderstorms expected in the northern and western suburbs of New York City on Tuesday are the edge of a system of storms from the Midwest, Sosnowski said.

"The most significant weather with the potential thunderstorms this evening would be heavy downpours," Bruce Furbeck of First Due Weather said on Facebook.

Then, after a lull Wednesday and Thursday, the potential for more downpours and gusty thunderstorms will increase, Sosnowski said.
