De Blasio Joins Big-City Mayors In Denouncing Trump's Travel Ban

New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio called the travel ban a " racist abdication of American values."

NEW YORK, NY — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio teamed up with the mayors of some of the United States' biggest cities to file a legal brief with the Supreme Court opposing President Donald Trump's attempts to restrict travel into the United States.

De Blasio and mayors such as Chicago's Rahm Emanuel, Los Angeles' Eric Garcetti, Philadelphia's Jim Kenney and Boston's Martin Walsh are some of the biggest names to support the legal brief. The brief was filed on behalf of more than 45 cities and counties as well as the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

"Trump’s travel ban is a racist abdication of American values," de Blasio said in a statement. "Here in New York City, we have shown how embracing immigrant communities makes us stronger and safer. We are proud to link arms with cities and municipalities across the nation and stand firm against the travel ban."

The current version of Trump's travel restrictions was issued via proclamation in September. The proclamation restricts travel to the United States by people from Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen, according to a press release.

The legal brief filed Friday claims that the proclamation "constitutes unlawful discrimination based on national origin and religion," according to a press release. Six of the eight countries in Trump's proclamation are majority-Muslim countries. The other two, North Korea and Venezuela, are countries seen as political rivals of the Trump administration.

Judges in Hawaii and Maryland have both ruled against the current iteration of the travel ban, and the Department of Justice is currently appealing those rulings, according to a press release.
