NEW YORK CITY — A massive Twitter outage hit New York City and the rest of the globe Thursday morning, according to Downdetector and reports.

Users began reporting the outage to Downdetector about 8 a.m. as they started to receive error messages from the influential social media site, the tracker reported.

"Something went wrong, but don't fret — it's not your fault," one Twitter error message stated.

Twitter's own status stated "investigating possible outage" about 9:14 a.m.

Outlets such as the New York Times reported the outage was global.

Service appeared to start returning about 9:15 a.m.

The outage likely left many media-hungry New Yorkers feeling bereft — although it's difficult to tell because they normally would be posting on Twitter.

Beyond snark and commentary, Twitter does give New Yorkers important information.

The Twitter accounts for the NYPD and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, among others, regularly provide public safety and health information.

But the social media platform's outage comes at a tumultuous time. Company leaders this week sued billionaire Elon Musk in an attempt to force him his $44 billion purchase of the company.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
