NYC-Bound Amtrak Train Detaches At 125 Miles Per Hour

NEW YORK, NY — Car on an Amtrak train heading to New York City from Washington, D.C., uncoupled Tuesday morning while traveling at 125 mile per hour somewhere in Maryland, reports and Amtrak officials said.

Two cars on Acela Express train 2150 broke apart while the train was in motion around 6:40 a.m. Monday, an Amtrak spokesman said in a statement. The train was carrying 52 passengers at the time of the "mechanical issue," the spokesman said in a statement. None of the passengers or crew members on the train were injured, the spokesman said.

The train was near Havre de Grace, Maryland en route to Penn Station at the time of the breakdown, NBC Washington reported.

The passengers were transferred from the broken train to a train on the Northeast Regional Train, an Amtrak spokesman said.

Amtrak is currently investigating why the two train cars detached and does not yet have an answer.

"We are currently investigating the cause of the car separation, inspecting every Acela trainset, and taking any necessary actions to prevent a reoccurrence," an Amtrak spokesman said in a statement.

The train detachment comes just days after a fatal Amtrak crash in South Carolina. An Amtrak passenger train crashed into a freight train near Columbia on Sunday, killing two Amtrak workers and leaving more than 100 people hurt, officials said.

And on Jan. 31, an Amtrak train carrying Republican members of Congress to a party retreat crashed into a truck in Albemarle County, Virginia, causing minor injuries onboard, killing one passenger on the truck and injuring the driver and a second passenger, according to authorities. The train crash happened west of Crozet, Virginia, about 15 miles from Charlottesville. The GOP retreat was scheduled to take place at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
