NYC Home To 55 Of 400 Richest People In America

That's an eighth of the country's wealthiest people.

NEW YORK CITY — New York City is home to more than an eighth of America's richest people. Some 55 of the multibillionaires on the 2017 Forbes 400 list released Tuesday currently live in the city.

The richest of those is industrial tycoon David Koch, who is tied for sixth on the list with his brother, Charles; both have fortunes of $48.5 billion. Finance magnate and former mayor Michael Bloomberg was close behind, hitting No. 8 with a net worth of $46.8 billion.

The price of admission to Forbes' annual ranking jumped nearly 18 percent to $2 billion, the magazine noted. There were 22 newcomers making the list for the first time and 26 billionaires on the 2016 list who fell off, including Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank.

One big loser from New York was President Donald Trump, whose fortune fell by more than $600 million to $3.1 billion and sent him down to No. 248 from No. 156. Forbes now lists Trump as living in Washington, D.C., but he grew up in Queens and has a residence at his namesake Manhattan tower.

To rank the 400 richest Americans, Forbes started with a list of about 600 people considered strong candidates. Its journalists then used public records, news reports and interviews with the people to determine their net worth. All types of assets were taken into account; Forbes also factored in debt.

Here are the 10 wealthiest New Yorkers who ranked on Forbes' list:

  • David Koch, net worth $48.5 billion, Koch Industries (No. 6)
  • Michael Bloomberg, net worth $46.8 billion, Bloomberg LP (No. 8)
  • Carl Icahn, net worth $16.7 billion, Icahn Enterprises, special adviser to President Donald Trump (No. 27)
  • Stephen Schwarzman, net worth $12.8 billion, Blackstone Group (No. 35)
  • Rupert Murdoch, net worth $12 billion, News Corporation (No. 39)
  • Ronald Perelman, net worth $11.7 billion, MacAndrews & Forbes Incorporated (No. 42)
  • Leonard Lauder, net worth $10.6 billion, Estee Lauder (No. 46)
  • John Paulson, net worth $7.8 billion, Paulson & Co. (No. 63)
  • Stephen Ross, net worth $7.5 billion, The Related Companies (No. 65)
