NYC Weather: Heat Index Could Reach 104, Advisory Extended To Thursday

Look for ways to cool off, New Yorkers — a heat advisory will now extend into Thursday as sweltering, "dangerous" temperatures strike city.

NEW YORK CITY — Hot dog (days of summer)!

A heat advisory for New York City will be extended from noon Wednesday to Thursday at 8 p.m. as temperatures inch into triple digits, according to the National Weather Service.

Gov. Kathy Hochul had already warned of "dangerous" temperatures from a heat wave, but the latest forecast calls for even more scorching weather reaching far into the 90-degree range, with even hotter heat indices.

"Max heat indices of 95 to 104 today and Thursday," a Wednesday weather overview states. "Low temperatures will range mostly in the mid 70s to around 80, which will not allow for much cooling off at night."

The heat advisory originally only stood for Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. But the National Weather Service extended it as forecasters looked at an impending potent combination of hot temperatures and high humidity.

Officials have opened cooling centers for New Yorkers without air conditioning and the most vulnerable — seniors and people with chronic health problems or mental health conditions — during heat waves.

New Yorkers can visit the city's "Beat The Heat" page or call 311 for cooling center locations.

And those with air conditioners are asked to limit energy use when possible, according to a Consolidated Edison heatwave alert that stated the utility plans to monitor for power outages.

The heat wave and anticipated rash of air conditioner-cranking by New Yorkers will prompt Mayor Eric Adams to order city facilities to lower their energy consumption and thus help avoid overloading the electrical grid, the New York Daily News first reported.
