NYC Weather: Heat Will Return After Rainy, Cool Start To Week

Crank up the AC after you pack up the umbrella — highs this week will hit 90 degrees, forecasters say.

NEW YORK CITY — Heat is poised to burn off a rainy start to the week in New York City.

Showers and thunderstorms are in Monday’s forecast, which carries a 90 percent chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service.

And temperatures are expected to fall to 72 degrees as potentially heavy rain washes through, the forecast states.

"The cold front passing through the Northeast may bring showers and storms to the coast on Monday, but usher in a cooler air mass behind it,” said Andrew Kienzle, an AccuWeather meteorologist, in a report by the service. “As a result, the ongoing stretch of hot weather will immediately come to an end.”

But the rainy and relatively cool weather won’t last, according to the forecast.

A dip in the jet stream that is expected to bring cooler temperatures is expected to move offshore by midweek, AccuWeather reported.

Temperatures will shoot up to about 80 degrees by Wednesday and keep rising, the forecast states. The high on Friday is expected to hit 90 degrees.

The weather likely will be a repeat of what happened last week, when heat and humidity returned after a spate of rain. New Yorkers on Saturday sweltered in 90-degree heat — the first time temperatures reached that high since May 31, AccuWeather reported.
