NYC Winter Storm Could Disrupt Subway Service, Officials Say

Transit officials predicted delays, service changes and possible suspensions in service as a result of Wednesday's winter storm.

NEW YORK, NY — City and state transit officials are closely monitoring Wednesday's winter storm in an effort to keep New York City's subway system running smoothly. With predicted snowfall totals as high as 18 inches, it'll be a tall task.

Transit officials predicted there may be delays, service cutbacks and possible service suspensions to the subway system Wednesday. The possible service changes were discussed by MTA Managing Director Ronnie Hakim during a Wednesday morning briefing with Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“We’re working to ensure that all of our service stays operational as long as it’s safe to do so. Should we make substantial service changes — whether it’s on subway or commuter rail — we’ll let you know," Hakim said.

The decision was expected to be made by midday, she said, though no announcement had been made as of 3:30 p.m.

Hakim said Wednesday that the MTA may cut some express subway service in an effort to use underground tunnels for storage.

New York City Transit Senior Vice President Darryl Irick confirmed that delays and some service cutbacks are expected.

"Based on the forecast we will expect sporadic delays, potential curtailments, and even suspensions. So, I would say, let’s keep our eyes open, our ears open, let’s sign up for the MTA alerts, look at the [MTA website] as the day progresses. There’s a high likelihood that there will be adjustments, delays, and maybe even curtailments," Irick said during a briefing with Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Some above-ground subway lines may be forced to suspend service due to high snowfall, but underground train lines should not be greatly affected by the storm, Irick said. Several bus routes may be suspended due to dangerous road conditions, Irick said Wednesday.
