NYC Snowfall Totals: Winter Storm Underperforms Predictions

Snowfall totals ranged from five to 13 inches for Wednesday's winter storm. Forecasts predicted as many as 18 inches.

NEW YORK, NY — The fourth nor'easter of March didn't quite live up to its threatened 16 to 18 inches of snow, but it came close in some parts of the city.

Wednesday's storm dumped nearly 14 inches of snow in some neighborhoods, according to the National Weather Service. But snowfall totals for other parts of the city barely rose above five inches, according to the weather service. Snowfall began around 7 a.m. Wednesday and continued through the night.

The storm appears to have hit Queens and Staten Island the hardest. In both boroughs, snowfall of at least 13 inches was recorded at more than one location. The Bronx seems to have been spared by Winter Storm Toby, as the borough's only recorded snowfall was a little more than 5 inches.

Brooklyn and Manhattan saw substantial snowfall in areas, but didn't really come close to the 16 to 18 inches that the weather service predicted. Bed-Stuy was hit with 12.7 inches of snow and Gramercy Park was hit with 10 inches of snow, both borough highs.

While the storm didn't hit its predicted snowfall totals, it did prompt New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to declare a state of emergency Wednesday afternoon for New York City and its surrounding counties. The governor deployed 300 members of the New York National Guard to the city and counties such as Putnam, Rockland, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk.

"As Mother Nature once again tests our great state, we have taken proactive measures in anticipation of the storm's heavy, wet snow that could impact power lines and cause dangerous travel conditions," Cuomo said Wednesday afternoon.

Snowfall totals in Suffolk county were at least 19 inches in towns such as Bay Shore and Patchogue. No other counties hit or exceeded the predicted 16 inches of snowfall.
