Upper West Side Fire Breaks Out In Apartment Building

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A fire broke out Thursday morning at an Upper West Side apartment building, an FDNY spokesman said.

Firefighters responded to a five-story building at 177 W. 83rd St., located between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues, around 8:20 a.m. to find a blaze on the building's first floor, an FDNY spokesman said. The fire was place under control around 9:10 a.m., the spokesman said.

There were no reports of injuries during the fire, an FDNY spokesman said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The five-story building where the fire broke out contains mostly apartments, but does have a ground-floor barber shop and tailor. It's unknown whether the fire started in one of the businesses or an apartment.
