4-Year-Old Girl, Her Grandmother Die After LI House Fire

More than 200 firefighters battled the deadly blaze early Sunday.

UPDATE: Nassau Police say the 68-year-old woman and her 4-year-old granddaughter have died from their injuries. Police have not released their names. The investigation into the fire remains ongoing.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY – Three people were injured in a house fire in New Hyde Park early Sunday. A 68-year-old woman and a 4-year-old girl are both listed in serious condition in the hospital, Nassau Police said.

The fire started shortly after 3 a.m. at a home on North 12th Street. The home, which was occupied by five people, was fully engulfed in flames when New Hyde Park firefighters arrived on the scene, police said.

Two residents escaped the fire uninjured, but the three others were taken to area hospitals for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns of varying degrees. A 68-year-old woman and her 4-year-old granddaughter suffered serious injuries. The woman's 10-year-old grandson is in stable condition. He jumped from a second floor window onto a parked vehicle to escape the flames, NBC 4 reported.

The New Hyde Park Fire Department was assisted by six other local departments. More than 200 firefighters battled the blaze.

Arson/Bomb Squad detectives responded to the scene and deemed the fire to be non-criminal, but the investigation is ongoing.
