Police ID 4-Year-Old Girl, Grandmother Killed in LI House Fire

The cause of the deadly blaze has also been revealed. Authorities say there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

The victims in a deadly Long Island house fire early Sunday have been identified as 68-year-old Maria Karpinski and 4-year-old Brooke Schillizzi.

Brooke, of Massapequa Park, was staying over at her grandparents home on North 12th Street in New Hyde Park with her 10-year-old brother went the house went up in flames shortly after 3 a.m.

Authorities say the fire was sparked by an unattended candle and there were no working smoke detectors in the home, CBS 2 reported.

It took seven fire departments and more than 200 firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

Karpinski and her granddaughter were both rushed to the hospital, but they died from their injuries later Sunday, Nassau Police said.

Karpinski's 10-year-old grandson jumped from a second floor window onto a parked vehicle to escape the flames. He was listed in stable condition.

An online fundraiser for the family on GoFundMe started Monday afternoon has already raised more than $66,000 toward an $80,000 goal.

"The family is devastated and in need of our support," the GoFundMe organizer wrote. "We are raising money to help with anticipated medical bills, funeral costs, time off of work, and anything else they may need to navigate this unfathomable ordeal."
