HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Three Starbucks locations in the Hudson Valley were confirmed by Patch to be closing.

According to the Starbucks location site, the following three Hudson Valley stores had their hours listed as "closed" for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday:

  • Bronxville: 29 Park Pl.
  • New Rochelle (Wykagyl): 1278-80 North Ave.
  • Chappaqua: 2 S. Greeley Ave.

Patch called the three stores that were listed as closed after Saturday — in each case, the employee who answered the phone confirmed that the locations would not reopen.

The workers said that some employees would be transferred to new stores, and others would be offered a severance package. Taking the severance package does not preclude the laid-off baristas from applying to rejoin the company at a later date, or at a different location.

"The company has been really good about this, actually. Most of the staff here will be going to another store," the employee who answered the phone at the Chappaqua location said. "It's kinda sad, but I think everyone here is going to be okay."

This comes as the Seattle coffee giant focuses more of its resources on a turnaround, CEO Brian Niccol wrote in a letter to employees on Thursday.

Niccol, who didn't say in his letter which stores will be shuttered, also said about 900 non-retail partner roles will be eliminated and many open positions will be closed.

Starbucks said on Thursday that it expects to end its fiscal year with 18,300 stores in North America, down 124 from last year.

The Seattle coffee giant notified employees whose positions are being eliminated on Friday and said that it plans to close an undetermined number of stores in North America in the coming days.

Niccol, a turnaround specialist who was brought to Starbucks a year ago to give the brand a jolt, said in the letter that a review of Starbucks locations revealed that many are falling short of financial performance targets or are failing to create the environment customers expect.

"Each year, we open and close coffeehouses for a variety of reasons, from financial performance to lease expirations," Niccol wrote. "This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers. Our coffeehouses are centers of the community, and closing any location is difficult."

Starbucks said it will offer severance and support packages for affected employees.
