The Alegria Ensemble: Music By Long Island Composers at Floyd Memorial Library

Event Details

Floyd Memorial Library, 539 1st St, Greenport, NY, 11944

The Alegria Quartet will perform new compositions from the composers of the Long Island Composers Alliance in this special concert at Greenport’s Floyd Memorial Library.

They will be performing works by North Fork Composer George Cork Maul, Edward Smaldone Catherine Neville, Joel Mandelbaum, Kyle Miller and Matthew Baier.

Founded in 2023, Alegría Ensemble is a dynamic and evolving chamber group rooted in a shared passion for musical collaboration at the highest level. What began as a piano trio has grown into an ensemble with a fluid performing roster, allowing for inventive programming and diverse concert experiences while maintaining the trio as its artistic core.

With the guidance of renowned musicians such as cellist Marcy Rosen (Mendelssohn Quartet) and violinist Daniel Phillips (Orion Quartet), they have developed a sound and ethos that resonate deeply with audiences.

Their global roots—Ricky Moreira from New York, Sara Juneau from Italy, and Chloe Dickens from the UK — bring diverse musical perspectives that complement each other and set an example of unity through music.

They strive to use their concerts as a platform to express the profound sense of togetherness that music fosters.

Music education is central to their mission, and their interactive workshops have been featured by WQXR and the NY Daily News. In 2024, Alegría Ensemble was honored to join the roster of the non-profit organization Young Musicians of Westchester, performing a series of concerts that saw Bach and Schubert alongside new works by Long Island Composers.

Alegría’s string quartet recently launched a summer series at Oak Ridge, spotlighting folk traditions and new music from around the world. In November, Alegría collaborated with composers at Queens College, presenting ten premieres for Pierrot ensemble and further expanding their engagement with cutting-edge contemporary music.

Through both their core trio work and expanded collaborations, Alegría continues to explore the boundless possibilities of chamber music and the profound sense of togetherness it inspires.

The Long Island Composers Alliance (LICA) was founded in 1972 by composers Marga Richter & Herbert Deutsch.

LICA has presented over 300 concerts featuring more than 1500 new compositions by over 100 Long Island based composers. LICA is the only organization devoted to creating, promoting, presenting, recording and preserving the best original, contemporary music by composers living and working on Long Island.
