Police: Southold Fire Department Helps Clean Up Route 48 Fuel Spill

Fire, police departments assist county department of public works in Route 48 fuel spill.

Members of the and helped to stop a diesel fuel leak from a truck that had pulled to the side of Route 48 in Peconic on Aug. 13 at 8:04 a.m., police reported.

While on patrol, officer Tim McGowan observed a tractor trailer stopped in the right, eastbound lane of Rt. 48 in Peconic with the diesel fuel tank leaking, police said. The drive shaft to the truck failed and broke off a fuel fitting on the truck’s fuel tank, causing fuel to dump out onto the roadway. Members of the Southold Fire Department responded and assisted in stopping the flow of fuel on the roadway. Suffolk County Department of Public Works also responded and assisted with the clean up.
