LONG ISLAND, NY — In the hours after President Donald Trump announced that the United States had bombed three nuclear sites in Iran, Gov. Kathy Hochul has issued a response — and police across Long Island say they are taking extra security measures.

"My top priority is the safety of New Yorkers," Hochul said. "Last night, following President Trump’s announcement, I convened my senior public safety team and spoke with colleagues in the federal and local government. I’ve been in close contact with State Police Superintendent Steven G. James and our homeland security, counterterrorism and cybersecurity experts."

She added: "We are not aware of any specific or credible threat to New Yorkers. However, given New York’s distinctive global profile, we are taking this situation extraordinarily seriously. All state agencies, utilities and other critical infrastructure facilities are on high alert to monitor for any possible disturbances. As a precaution, the MTA and Port Authority have activated counterterrorism protections in partnership with local law enforcement. The State Police will continue safety patrols outside houses of worship and other at risk sites — efforts that have been underway since the onset of this crisis."

And, Hochul said: "I recognize this is a time of fear and uncertainty for New Yorkers. We have some of America’s largest Jewish and Muslim communities, and many have loved ones in the region. As we work to keep New Yorkers safe, we pray for the safety of our American troops, for speedy deescalation of this conflict, and for durable peace in the region."

Suffolk County police told Patch: "In light of recent events in Iran, Suffolk County police are increasing patrols and checks at government buildings and religious institutions. Although there are currently no credible threats in our area, members of the department are monitoring the situation and are in communication with our law enforcement partners. As always, residents are encouraged to call 911 to report suspicious activity."

In Nassau County, police said: "In light of events occurring in the Middle East, Police Commissioner[Patrick Ryder has consulted with Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and has received briefings from the intelligence community and our partners in law enforcement. There is no credible threat to Nassau County at this time, but we are enhancing our patrols around critical infrastructure, especially houses of worship."

President Donald Trump said Saturday that the U.S. military struck three sites in Iran, directly joining Israel ’s effort to decapitate the country’s nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe amid Tehran’s threat of reprisals that could spark a wider regional conflict.

The decision to directly involve the U.S. comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that have moved to systematically eradicate the country’s air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities. But U.S. and Israeli officials have said that American stealth bombers and a 30,000-lb. bunker buster bomb they alone can carry offered the best chance of destroying heavily-fortified sites connected to the Iranian nuclear program buried deep underground.

"We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan," Trump said in a post on social media. "All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home."
