Upper Nyack Students Hold Unique Food Drive

Upper Nyack second graders have combined a visit to a unique sculpture show, and their artistic imagination with a successful food drive to combat hunger in the county.

Recently, the school’s second grade and first and second grade multiage classes visited the Canstruction Art Exhibit and competition in New York City. Canstruction, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that holds annual design and building competitions to construct fantastic, giant sized, structures made entirely out of canned food. The purpose of the trip was to engage, amaze and inspire the students to work together to help their community.

In each city after the canstructures are built and the winners declared the creations go on view to the general public as giant art exhibits. At the close of the exhibit all of the food used is donated. Upper Nyack students followed that model and collected 426 cans of food, using 278 of them to build their own great sculpture of an "I Pad" with the I CAN (Fight Hunger) logo. (See attached photo). All the food will be donated to People to People of Rockland County.

Wherever a Canstruction competition is held thousands of hungry people are fed, and a greater awareness of issues surrounding hunger is brought home to the public. It certainly had a positive, educational impact on Upper Nyack students.
