An Unpleasant Smell in Piermont
Halted progress on an Old Erie Trail sewer project has left the area by Ash Street smelling scatological.
If you live on Piermont's Ash Street, you've definitely smelled it. And if you live anywhere nearby, you've likely caught a whiff, too.
The Town of Orangetown, which was operating on Old Erie Trail near Ash Street and aiming to clean some 20,000-feet of sewers, recently halted its work because they exceeded their $200,000 budget.
As a result, the project remains unfinished—and the stink of raw sewage has become pervasive. Several of the manholes and sewer entrances opened in the process are now covered with temporary concrete slabs. A sign has been installed near the construction that reads, "Fire Danger: Very High."

The issue was addressed at Tuesday's Village Board meeting when a concerned resident inquired about the project.
"I hadn't seen any trucks [working] up there recently," he said. "But the smell has continued since they stopped work."

The village is currently in talks about continuing the project, Mayor Christopher Sanders replied.
