Contested School Board Election, Budget Vote Coming Up In Nyack

There are two additional propositions on the ballot, for capital projects.

NYACK, NY — Voters in the Nyack school district go to the polls Tuesday to weigh in on the 2024-25 spending plan and two propositions for capital projects, and choose two school trustees.

Four people are running for two open seats on the Nyack Board of Education: Elaine Pilhower, Violet Merjanian, Scott Nappi and Bryan Burrell.

The proposed $106,980,784 budget comes with a tax levy increase of 2.9 percent, under the state cap.

Proposition 2 and Proposition 3 carry no additional cost to the taxpayer.

Proposition 2 seeks voter approval to expend funds from Capital Reserve 2015 in the amount of $8,811,000 for two previously approved projects: districtwide air conditioning and boiler replacement at Liberty and Upper Nyack elementary schools plus the Hilltop Administration Building, plus:

  • Repointing of gymnasium side of the Nyack High School cafe
  • Hardwiring of lights for the new parking lot at Nyack High School
  • Valley Cottage Elementary School roof (partial funding, the rest is in the budget)
  • Old Nyack High School boiler and masonry

Proposition 3 asks voters to approve a new Capital Reserve fund into which up to $10 million could be deposited over a 10-year period to fund all or part of the costs of future capital improvements. Voter approval will be required for the expenditure of any sums deposited into this Reserve.
