Nyack Sidewalks to Receive Overhaul

A $50,000 grant from the federal government will fund the renovation of several dilapidated Nyack walkways.

Nyack's pedestrians will soon have a smoother walk around town.

The Village of Nyack recently received a $50,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. The CDBG funds, which were administered to the community on a need basis, will be used to repair and construct sidewalks and pedestrian walkways in low-to-moderate incomes areas within the village.

In areas where the current sidewalk is highly deteriorated, the pavement will be removed and new materials will be laid down. And although sidewalks in front of residents' homes are technically their private property, the grant will cover the repair of these sections, too.

The village approved the project at July 22 board meeting, and continued on to select the regions most in need. The first areas to be fixed will be a 400 ft. stretch on High Avenue (between N. Franklin Street and North Broadway) and a 400 ft. stretch on North Midland Avenue, near Nyack Hospital.

Mayor Richard Kavesh noted these areas were in dire need of repair, and the grant was a welcome gift.

"If there's money left after these projects, we will repair sidewalks in the south part of the village," Kavesh added.
