Piermont May Receive Free Land

A Piermont resident hopes to donate one acre of property to the village—a proposal trustees and the Planning Board are looking into.

The Village of Piermont may receive one acre of forested property—free of charge.

Pat Esgate, a Piermont resident, appeared in front of village trustees at Tuesday's meeting to discuss the possible donation of land.

"We're still in discussion, and looking into what tax ramifications it would have," Esgate said. "But we're curious as to whether or not the Village of Piermont would be interested in accepting."

The land in question is on 9W, near Tweed Boulevard. The area is fully treed, houses an old foundation and is free of drainage problems.

Esgate's only stipulation? No construction.

"The only provision would be to keep it as green-space," she told the board. "We like the fact that we live in a treed area—I'm not looking for 9W to become a barren wasteland."

Mayor Chris Sanders noted the idea has received significant support from the Planning Board, but the village has yet to look into possible maintenance costs.

"It's an intriguing proposal," he said. "I think there's plenty of interest from the board, and I can speak for the village when I say I appreciate this."

The matter is still in discussion, and will be looked into further at the Sept. 7 Village Board meeting.
