Reasons to Stick Around This Weekend

"Stay-cation" has become a hackneyed phrase—but that doesn't mean it's off-target.

Jazz Week may be over, and National Night Out come and gone, but that's no reasons to pack your bags and head out of town (ahem—village) this weekend. Here's what's up:

Friday

  • The weekend will kick off with a evening performance of "Once Upon a Mattress" at Riverspace. It's a musical—and comedic—take on a classic, and tickets are $15. And no worries if you miss it—the musical will be running throughout the month of August.
  • There's more music at the Nyack Village Theater—the Beautiful Explosions series will continue at 9 p.m. with live rock and jazz.
  • Also this Friday: Wii gaming at the Nyack Public Library. (It could be your week's workout regimen).

Saturday

  • This Saturday is Nyack's first-ever Plaza Bazaar—a street fair where anyone can participate and all proceeds go toward bettering the Plaza's youth programs. The bazaar, held outside at the Plaza, runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Sunday, it runs from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • It's the final night of Elmwood Playhouse's Boy Gets Girl—a "provocative and unsettling drama," their website informs me. The show begins at 8 p.m.
  • Cap the night off with fireworks over the river, put on by the Nyack Boat Club. Sprawl out on a blanket in memorial park, or forget all about the event until a deafening boom knocks you off the couch.

Sunday

  • Catch Piermont's farmers' market Sunday morning and afternoon, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the M&T Bank Parking Lot.
  • Prepare for Sunday's "Mad Men" by taking in a vintage clothing showcase at the Nyack Village Theater. The spectacle, titled Pretty Penny Vintage Showcase, will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
