Rockland: Air Quality Alert Friday

County officials say watch out for ozone

The Rockland County Health Department (RCHD) has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Friday, noting ozone levels are slated to surpass the national average.

Increased exposure to ozone can cause shortness of breath, irritated eyes, nose and throat, coughing and fatigue; children and the elderly are particularly susceptible to ozone, said Dr. Facelle, Rockland County Commissioner of Health.

To prevent these symptoms, officials say residents should limit strenuous activity outdoors and stay in a cool place.

The peak time for high levels is earlier in the day.

"Ozone levels are usually highest after noon and through early evening hours on hot, sunny days, and therefore this part of the day is the peak time for symptoms," Facelle, said. "Performing vigorous exercise outdoors such as running also makes a person more likely to experience symptoms from exposure to ozone."
