Star Bar Brings Celebrity Hair to Nyack

It's common to walk into a salon with a celebrity's hairstyle in mind.

But how often is your hair stylist also that celebrity's beautician?

At one of Nyack's newest downtown businesses—Star Bar at 95 1/2 Main Street—it's a matter of course.

"We're Rockland's first cosmetic and blow dry bar," said owner Mindy Draizin, who opened the shop about six weeks ago. Draizin does hair and makeup for athletes and broadcasters on CBS, dolling up the likes of Dan Marino and others.

And Draizin's colleagues, who number just under ten, have similar resumes.

"All the girls that work here also work for TV," Draizin explained. "I've taken the best girls from our industry, and this is our home base. It's where we work when we're on hiatus."

Star Bar's hardwood floors stretch far back from the business' entrance, and house sections for hair and makeup, a shampooing station, and dressing rooms, for those that want to bring along duds.

"We do blowouts, up-dos, makeup, waxing, lash extensions—basically, we're the first bar you hit on a Friday evening before going out," Draizin said.

Star Bar also accommodates bridal parties, wedding preparations, proms and other special events.

Draizin's vision is to bring to Rockland what exists almost exclusively in Manhattan.

"And Nyack is the SoHo of Rockland," she added.

When she first opened her doors, Draizin anticipated work would be done on a walk-in basis. But as the business has evolved, she has settled into an appointment-only approach. Star Bar also offers an "on-location" team, where stylists can swoop in and prepare a group for a party at home.

What sets Star Bar apart, Draizin says, is not just the stylists in charge—but also the products.

"We use the same cosmetics and makeup used on HDTV," she said. "It leaves the skin flawless—these are items the public can't buy."
