Synagogue Sues Haverstraw Town For Religious Discrimination

HAVERSTRAW, NY — Orthodox Jewish residents of Haverstraw have sued the town, the town’s planning board and three planning board members because the residents claim the town conspired to prevent a single-family home from becoming a synagogue.

The suit claims that Haverstraw planning board members gave in to antisemitic rhetoric from neighbors of the single-family home and rejected the plan, the Journal News reported.

Khal Bnei Torah of Mount Ivy wants to turn the single-family home in a resident part of town into a synagogue.

The federal lawsuit was filed Thursday, one year after antisemitic comments were made by a neighbor of the home that referenced running over Orthodox Jewish children.
