Village May Foot $50,000 Repair Bill

Unless a building at 23 Main St. in Nyack is bought and fixed privately, taxpayers will initially shoulder the repair costs.

The repair and shoring of a dilapidated building at 23 Main St. may cost the village upward of $50,000.

The building was put on notice for disrepair in past months, but owners failed to respond with appropriate plans or renovations within the 60-day time frame. Consequently, the Health and Safety Department will have to secure the building and bring it up to code.

The village is obligated to pay the bill for safety reasons, said Mayor Kavesh. The owner will then later be billed the appropriate amount on his taxes.

At a July 22 village Board meeting, village officials approved an expenditure that allows the Health and Safety Department to draw up a design for appropriate renovations. The design process will cost approximately $6,000.

If no individuals or companies step forward to buy the building after the design process is complete, the village will be responsible for stabilizing the structure. The stabilization process will cost approximately $50,000.
