Drug Possession, a West Nyack Fire, and a Surfeit of Antiques
The week of Aug. 9, 2010
This past week kept village and town authorities busy, particularly in the realms of drug possession and impaired driving.
On Monday, two teens were stopped in Nyack and charged with possession of marijuana. The two men, ages 17 and 18, are due in Nyack Justice Court later this month.
Wednesday, on the heels of that incident, a Nyack man was charged in Piermont with the same misdemeanour. He was initially pulled over for talking on his cell phone while driving.

The week's police activity culminated Thursday with the arrest of two Virginia residents passing through South Nyack. They were found to be driving while impaired, in possession of marijuna—and carrying a loaded handgun.
The region's fire authorities were busy, too—six municipality's fire departments responded to a blaze in West Nyack Tuesday that temporarily closed down Stawtown Road; no one was injured. For video and photos of the fire, click here.

County and village governments were occupied, as well. Rockland County's Comprehensive Plan is still in the pipes, and the region's unemployed received some backlogged checks. In Piermont, the village is polarized over turning a boat storage facility—and rowing club meeting place—into eight new parking spots.
Ah, but we musn't forget the arts. This week, readers took a look at Nyack's sprawling antique scene and community garden. Also: a peek at the inimitable Pickwick Book Shop and a few of Mr. McGinley's favorite things.
