Flooding, Burglary and the Start of Fall Sports

The week of Aug. 23, 2010

For those perpetually tuned in to the region's police and fire radios (probably just me), it was a loud week.

A Sunday night storm meant shuttered businesses and a water-logged Main Street on Monday morning (and the loss of a beloved, 100-year-old tree). Several stores and homes in Nyack—along with the village's Department of Public Works—dealt with up to three feet of water.

Also: Orangetown Police nabbed an alleged repeat-offender house burglar on Wednesday, and Oak Hill Cemetery violated village code by cutting down several protected oak trees.

Tuesday night was energetic night for Nyack Schools—all at one public hearing, Nyack appointed an interim superintendent, bid farewell to Dr. Valencia Douglas and debated—with gusto—the merits and drawbacks of a closed campus policy. Weigh in and lend your voice any of these issues in Patch's comment sections.

On a lighter note this past week: Nyack and Piermont residents were introduced to a persistent and spunky nun, and learned how a truck crashing through a storefront ultimately benefited the villages.

And did you hear? Nyack's been named one of America's coolest small towns.

Area sports had a compelling seven days, too—the Piermont Yankees are gearing up for baseball.
