Croton-Harmon Elementary Students Fundraise for Harry Chapin Run
Students donated funds and improved their cardiovascular endurance.

Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School students in Croton-on-Hudson were busy raising funds and preparing for the annual Harry Chapin Memorial Run/Walk Against Hunger, which was held on Oct. 16 beginning at Croton-Harmon High School.
“For about three weeks, the students have been donating to the cause,” said CET physical education teacher Suzanne Leslie. “Every student and teacher at CET was given a sneaker. The students colored and decorated their sneakers in any way they wanted and brought in at least $1 with it. I was amazed at the level of creativity these students had when decorating their sneakers!”

In addition to contributing sneakers for a sneaker wall at CET, students practiced their cardiovascular endurance fitness. Kindergarten and first-grade students got physical in the gymnasium by participating in tag games, outdoor and locomotor movement activities, and nature walks around the school.
“Third- and fourth-grade students ran on both the school's track and grass field. Students were asked to set a goal each day for the number of laps they could run and they even had the opportunity to use pedometers to keep track of their steps,” said Leslie.

CET raised more than $470 for the Harry Chapin race, which benefits the Harry Chapin Memorial Run Against Hunger, a nonprofit organization made up of local volunteers. Donations to the charity benefit organizations including the Cortlandt Emergency Food Bank, Croton Caring Committee, Caring for the Homeless of Peekskill, Hillside Food Outreach, the Food Bank for Westchester and WhyHunger.
“We are so excited to donate to this wonderful organization,” said Leslie. “The students were so happy when they brought their sneakers in, and the sneaker wall looks wonderful!”
