OPINION: We Have to Make Preserving our Schools a Priority

I have one young child in the and another will be entering in September 2012.  I have spent a great deal of time learning about the urgent infrastructure needs and capacity issues at the schools and the repairs and replacements can go only so far before money goes down the drain. We have increasing enrollment, one of the highest in Westchester County. It’s our responsibility as a community to preserve our assets in a financially sound manner. Isn’t it better to take care of needs before they become an “emergency” repair that will end up costing more in the long run?
 
With interest rates low and locking in a significant amount of building aid from NYS on the day of the vote essentially makes this financial strategy an interest-free loan that addresses urgent issues.
 
I know all too well how deteriorating infrastructure and below standard physical learning environments can adversely impact our students.  I attended inner city schools that crumbled before my eyes, where children were placed in trailers because repairs were not done in time and were done on an “emergency basis” makes this an issue that raises great concern for me.
 
As a parent of young children, my goal is to give my children a quality, well-rounded education in a supportive, welcoming community. We have to make preserving our schools a priority.  Please show your support on Tuesday, March 6 th at the voting polls (OHS from 7am to 9pm).
