Pierre Van Cortlandt MS Students Explore Human Impact On The Western Hemisphere
Fifth graders received hands on experience on how the diverse geography of the Western Hemisphere impacted physical environments of humans.
From Croton-Harmon Schools: Members of the Camilo/Romm fifth-grade team at Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School in Croton-on- Hudson tackled real-world problems through an interdisciplinary unit exploring their human impact on the Western hemisphere.
“During this interdisciplinary LATIC (Learner Active Technology Infused Classroom) unit, students studied how the diverse geography of the Western Hemisphere influenced humans to modify their physical environment,” said Camilo. “They had to identify a species, research and design a solution to a real-world problem in the Western Hemisphere.”
It was up to the students to work at their own pace, complete a series of activities, participate in optional, small group lessons, sign up to meet with their teachers and utilize technology to successfully complete their projects.

During the research process, students received feedback and were able to improve their studies by working with classroom teachers, as well as librarian Linda Fuerst and teacher Catherine Brennan in the school’s Innovation and Design Lab.
The work culminated in student-led presentations, held in the PVC cafeteria on March 1.
