Rhoads Declared Winner Over Brooks, Flips State Senate District 5
Democrat John Brooks has represented District 8 since 2017. Republican Steven Rhoads is a Nassau legislator.

LONG ISLAND, NY β Voters went to the polls on Tuesday to choose the next state senator to represent New York's 5th Senate District. John E. Brooks (D) ran against Steven Rhoads (R) in the district, which was redrawn in 2022.
Newsday called the race for Rhoads around midnight.
The results flip the seat to red, part of a wave of Nassau Republican victories this Election Day.

With 100 percent of Nassau districts reporting, the final tallies Wednesday morning were:
John E. Brooks β 50,985 votes

Steven Rhoads β 79,486 votes.
Redistricting of the State Senate district map on Long Island meant a two-term Democrat incumbent from the 8th District was running against a Nassau County Republican legislator in the 5th District.
Democrat John E. Brooks, 72, served two terms representing the 8th District. Republican Steven Rhoads, 53, of Bellmore, has represented the 19th Nassau Legislative District since 2015. Democrat James Gaughran won the 5th District seat in 2020 with 50.4 percent of the vote.
