SANDS POINT, NY — A firefighter was injured while taking down a seven-alarm blaze at a home in Sands Point Monday night, the Port Washington Fire Department said.

The fire department was first alerted to the fire by an automatic alarm that went off at a home on Lilian Court at around 11:30 p.m., then an occupant of the home called to alert them that a dryer fire in the basement had caught fire, the department’s Public Information Officer Chris Bollerman said Tuesday.

While the fire department was beginning its response, Sands Point police officers reported there was a heavy smoke condition, said Bollerman, who was briefed by Capt. Emma Nadel.

“Upon arrival, the members of the Port Washington Fire Department initiated an aggressive interior attack by entering the basement, locating, confining, and extinguishing the fire,” he said, adding that “due to an extensive overhaul operation” a second alarm was transmitted for mutual aid.

The fire was brought under control in just over an hour and was contained to the basement, Bollerman said.

However, one mutual aid firefighter was cut on his head and was then taken to a local hospital, he said.

The fire drew around 100 firefighters to the scene, according to Bollerman.

Along with Port Washington, the fire drew a response from seven different fire departments, including Manhasset-Lakeville, Great Neck Alert, Great Neck Vigilant, Williston Park, Glenwood, and Albertson.
