LI Coronavirus Heroes: Nurse Lives In Camper To Protect Family
Today's hero is a nurse caring for COVID-19 patients, who has to stay isolated from her four children.
EAST PATCHOGUE, NY — As Long Islanders practice social distancing and make personal sacrifices as part of the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, many look to those on the front lines as inspiration. Patch will be highlighting Long Islanders who are going above and beyond in their work and community to help during the health crisis.
Mastic Beach resident Jane Mccarthy is working directly with COVID-19 patients at Long Island Community Hospital as a nurse but when she comes home from her shifts, Mccarthy doesn't get to go inside her home and relax with her family, according to friend Laura Bittel. Bittel, who nominated Mccarthy, says she is living in a camper in her driveway to protect her four children from exposure to the virus.
"She has been taking extra shifts to care for those ill and dying from the virus," Bittel told Patch. Her husband Tim Mccarthy is working as a HVAC installer at a temporary coronavirus hospital being erected in Westchester County.
