MEDFORD, NY — Suffolk police were called to Patchogue-Medford High School on Wednesday after a student received a spam message from Snapchat asking if they wanted to buy guns or drugs, but it was deemed no credible threat, authorities said.
There was a spam social media post, which was sent anonymously to a student, and the school helped the student handle it, a school district spokeswoman said.
In a letter to parents, Schools Superintendent Donna Jones said administrators learned that a student received a spam Snapchat message on Tuesday night asking if the recipient wanted "to purchase drugs and guns."
"The district was made aware of the message through its student safety software, which identified the message and the student who received the message," she wrote. "The student was interviewed, and an investigation was opened in coordination with the Suffolk County Police Department."
"Please continue to speak with your children about the importance of engaging in safe social media practices and reporting inappropriate content to adults who can help them," Jones continued. "We will continue to act as a resource to students and families and to monitor content on District grounds and devices for the safety of all."
Investigators determined the message was deemed "no credible threat."
Police were called to the school just before 1 p.m.
