Long Island Weather: Snow Expected to Impact Friday Commute
The Friday morning commute may be a mess, but the focus continues to be on a "more significant precipitation event" this weekend.

There are two snow threats in the Long Island forecast; a minor one that will likely impact the Friday morning commute and then what the National Weather Service is calling a "more significant precipitation event"come this weekend.
A quick-moving system will bring light snow to the island early Friday morning. Less than an inch is expected to accumulate before the snow mixes with rain and eventually turns to all rain.
Most places should completely dry out by the late morning and toward lunch time on Friday, the NWS says.

A quick moving system will bring a light accumulating snowfall to much of the region Thursday night into Friday morning before changing to rain. Travel will be hazardous due to poor visibility & snow covered roads, particularly across the interior for the Friday am commute. pic.twitter.com/b1SJGLqxvL

For the weekend, wet weather is likely from Saturday evening until late Sunday night. The type of precipitation remains tricky to pinpoint with the storm still days away.
The current forecast calls for a few hours of snow Saturday evening before warming temperatures turn that into rain, which is likely to continue through the day Sunday. When temperatures fall back near the freezing mark Sunday evening, we could see snow for several hours. No snow accumulation estimates have been released for the weekend storm.

Models have been volatile regarding the weekend storm -- overnight data did trend colder for all locations, with more front end snow and ice. Last 6 runs of the GFS model valid 7am Sunday shown below. Someone is going to get crushed with this system... pic.twitter.com/tU8T61Iblx

Snowfall amounts are uncertain and will be dependent on how quickly the changeover to rain occurs and how long snow persists on the storm's back edge, weather.com says.
One thing that does seem to be fairly certain at this point: it is going to be brutally cold come Monday morning.
Lots to still figure out with the weekend storm but one thing is for certain...brutally cold air Monday near record levels + strong winds I'd plan for some indoor activities if you have MLK Day off pic.twitter.com/ctNTn8MXpw
