Suffolk Cop Shoots Man Who Assaulted Him: Police

Police say the officer had first deployed his taser twice, but it was ineffective early this morning.

PATCHOGUE, NY – A Suffolk County Police officer shot a man who became combative and assaulted the officer early Monday in Patchogue, police said.

According to police, a Fifth Precinct officer was in the parking lot of the Fifth Precinct on Waverly Avenue when he heard a call over the radio at 2:15 a.m. of a description of a suspect involved in a commercial burglary in Patchogue.

Within minutes, the officer, who was off-duty and driving home, observed a man fitting the description walking on Waverly Avenue, near East 3rd Street, police said.

The officer, who was still in uniform, approached the man who became combative and began assaulting the officer, police said.

The officer deployed his taser twice, but it was ineffective, police said.

During the altercation, the man tackled the officer to the ground, police said. The officer then shot the man once in the torso, police said.

The 33-year-old man, who police did not name, was transported to a local hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The officer, a five-year veteran of the Suffolk Police Department, was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Police also did not release his name.

No charges have been filed. The investigation is continuing.
