WATCH: Protesters Chant 'I Can't Breathe' At Patchogue Protest
A mostly young, peaceful crowd gathered Monday to support the Black Lives Matter cause.
PATCHOGUE, NY — After some confusion about the legitimacy of a protest in response to George Floyd's death and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in Patchogue Monday afternoon, over a hundred protesters gathered peacefully. The protest, held in front of Capital One Bank, had no official organization named in the event flyers disseminated across social media, leading some to worry it was not a legitimate protest. But James Skidmore, of Patchogue, and former president of the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, took this video showing a peaceful gathering of mostly young Long Islanders.
It was "a well-organized peaceful protest in the Village of Patchogue— a wealth of youth exercising their rights," Skidmore said.
The Facebook page for the Suffolk County Democratic Socialists of America, which has been sharing many of the protest events, initially issued a warning that the protest was "unofficially canceled" due to concerns it may have been a "fake rally."
