CORTLANDT, NY — The building that houses the government for the town of Cortlandt will be named in honor of a longtime and recent supervisor.

Supervisor Richard Becker said Thursday the town would be naming its town hall for former supervisor Linda D. Puglisi, according to a news release.

The special ceremony will be held Sunday, May 1, which has been declared to be Linda D. Puglisi Day.

"We are pleased to be able to honor former Supervisor Linda D. Puglisi with the naming of the Town Hall in recognition of her 34 years of dedicated service to our Town and community," Becker said.

The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. and will be followed by light refreshments.

Puglisi retired in December after more than three decades years of service to the town. She was on the original negotiating team as a councilwoman to purchase the former Lakeland School District elementary school in 1989.

After a successful public referendum vote in 1991, the town bought the school to use as town hall offices. The necessary improvements were approved in early 1992, and by December of that year, the building was dedicated and opened to the public.

Town officials said this year will mark the 30th anniversary of the opening of the historic building that was constructed in the 1930s as a WPA project.

Puglisi said she was grateful for the honor and thanked Becker and the Town Board.

"I remember taking a tour through this then closed elementary school," she said, "and remarking that this lovely and historic former school would be perfect for our town hall purposes.

"Therefore, I am so honored and humbled to have our town hall where I worked every day for 30 years have my name on it for now and for generations to come," Puglisi said.

The ceremony is open to the public. To RSVP, email the town by Monday, April 25.

Cortlandt Town Hall is at 1 Heady St.
