Duplex Fire in Peekskill Under Investigation

One person received minor injuries from the fire, which took place on Washington Street earlier today.

Fire officials are investigating a structure fire that ignited inside a two-family duplex earlier today.

The fire started inside a two-and-a-half story, two-family duplex at 508 Washington Street, shortly before noon, according to Peekskill firefighters.

Firefighters said the four people who were inside the home had evacuated prior to their arrival, but one of the residents suffered a minor injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. It was unclear what the nature of the injury was Tuesday evening.

Peekskill Chief Robert Fiorio said firefighter were answering another call on Ringgold Street when the fire call came in and this allowed them to respond to the scene quickly. The fire originated in a second-story bedroom and was contained there, according to Fiorio.

The building was deemed uninhabitable. The adjoining unit, 510 Washington Street was OK, but the gas was turned off, Fiorio said.

Firefighters from Buchanan, Continental Village, Croton, Mohegan Lake and Montrose assisted Peekskill with the fire.

Fiorio said Peekskil had three professional and 25 volunteer firefighters at the scene.

The fire was deemed accidental, but the cause is still under investigation.
