Hudson Valley Hospital Center Now Offers 3D Mammography

Cortlandt Manor, NY —Yearly mammography screening for signs of breast cancer is essential for basic breast health, but now the Women’s Imaging Center at HVHC is offering a new, ultra-sensitive screening that can detect potential cancers through 3-dimensional imaging. 

The new technology, called digital tomosynthesis, is not for everyone, but it is useful for high-risk patients and can help radiologists clarify inconclusive test results.

“A normal digital mammography provides two 2-D images: each side of the breast is imaged twice, totaling  four images per breast, which radiologists can use to look for any abnormalities,” says Kathy Kiernan, MS, RTR, MR, Administrative Director of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Oncology at the Woman’s Imaging Center. “In conjunction with mammography, we’ve added digital tomosynthesis, a technology that provides 3-dimensional imaging.”

With digital tomosynthesis, women experience the same physical screening as with a digital mammogram, but the equipment moves to take images from different angles. This not only adds a third dimension to the image but also provides many additional images that reduce the chances of the radiologist missing small masses that might be hidden by overlapping tissue. This results in greater certainty for radiologists and increased safety for patients.
