Mt. Carmel Society to Throw Free Picnic for Military, Veterans and Families

In honor of veterans the picnic will be held on Armed Forces Day, May 19.

The Mt. Carmel Society is best known for celebrating its Italian heritage with the festival each summer. But this year, the non-profit organization wants to throw a celebration for another group of people important in this community, military members and veterans and families. So, the Mt. Carmel Society is throwing a large, free picnic for veterans and military members from all branches of service on Saturday, May 19. The picnic will be at the ball field at 8th St. and Highland Ave. in Verplanck from 1 to 5 p.m.

“It is just something to do to say thanks to these guys in the past and present for what they did,,” said Gene Capicotto, the President of the Mt. Carmel Society. ” You know some lost arms, legs, its just to say thank you, that’s all it is.”

The picnic will have hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken and BBQ food and music by the West Point band. Senator Greg Ball’s veterans will also be there, Capicotto said. Any proceeds made and collected during the picnic will go to the Wounded Warriors Project.

The whole community has come together to donate or help make this picnic happen. Several local unions, the Town of Cortlandt and veterans groups have all donated something or helped in some way.

However, they still need someone to sponsor a tent and there are few last details that they are working out.  If you or your business would like to donate or sponsor any part of the picnic you can contact Gene Capicotto at 914-806-2101.
