New Cortlandt Organization Aims to Teach Kids for Free

Cortlandt resident Priten Shah is a philanthropist aiming to provide local underprivileged children the opportunity to learn at no extra cost.

“He really thinks that knowledge is something that should be spread,” said Teach-2-Learn’s Chairman of Public Relations Chris Callinan, of its founder. “He wanted to do  something to help achieve that goal.”

Shah set up Teach-2-Learn about two months ago, which will provide books and free tutoring to any student who needs it. The tutoring will be available for grades K through 12. Eventually, he hopes the program expands to provide books to children in underprivelaged areas across the world. 

“We are working with the Lakeland Central School District and hope to expand dramatically around September into surrounding areas,” Callinan said. “We hopefully will create more chapters.”

The organization is still waiting for its non-profit status in order to start collecting donations. In the mean time, they are collecting books.

The community and Arise Foundation have been supporting those efforts. If you have a book to give, you can drop it off at Walter Panas High School or Teach to Learn Headquarters at Suite 209, 629 Route 6, Mahopac. They accept lightly used or new books. 

The organization is run by a six-person executive cabinet and 10 person board of directors. All involved are volunteers.

Several community members who are students, parents and professors have already committed to volunteering as regular tutors.
