Peekskill's Syncere Claxton Wins 'HealthYorktown' Run/Walk [Photos]

"It's a nice family thing to do but it's also to support the schools," said Andrea Trugold, who walked Saturday morning with her 9-year-old daughter Rebecca and 79-year-old father Peter Somogyi. "It's something everyone of all ages can do and it's a healthy thing to do."

Participants in the event were young kids, community members, school teachers and principals, among others. For Marni Weinbaum, a guidance counselor at , the goal was to run the course the entire time without stopping and, of course, to support her school district.

12-year-old Peekskill resident, Syncere Claxton, who is a long distance runner with the Westchester Striders team, finished first overall with a time of 18:49. He called the race "exhilarating" and "exciting." His teammate Jenna Pressman, who finished fifth, said the race was not about winning, but rather it was to improve her own time. Several other participants were from Cortlandt and Peekskill. See list below. 

All the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Foundation for Excellence in Yorktown Education and the Lakeland Education Foundation.

"Both foundations are very lucky to be here," Lakeland Education Foundation president Denise Kness said. "Schools request different items that might help the health and wellness in school and we're able to grant those requests for both of our foundations. On behalf of both schools and our community, we're here together. It means a lot."
