PHOTOS: Looking East to Peekskill

Nestled among Hudson Valley hills along a crescent strip of the Hudson River shore, the City of Peekskill reflects the sun from a distance.

About Dunderberg:

From the New York New Jersey Trail Conference Map

The Dunderberg Spiral Railway Company was incorporated on Nov. 2, 1889 to construct a spiral railway to the top of Dunderberg Mountain. The cars were to be pulled to the top by cables along an inclined track, powered by stationary steam engines. The descent was to be by gravity, along a ten-mile winding grade. At the top, there was to be a large hotel. Construction began in the spring of 1890 but ended abruptly in September of that year. During the few months of construction, much of the proposed route was graded, and two tunnels were started. The graded portions of the railway are walkable. Both the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail and the Timp-Torne Trail follow graded sections of the railway.
