CORTLANDT, NY — The opening the of Charles J. Cook Pool in Cortlandt which had been delayed due to a leak will have to be delayed once again.

The town of Cortlandt had hoped to reopen the pool Saturday, but a news release posted on the town's website said officials are hoping it can open the following week — still ahead of when the county pools are scheduled to open.

Ongoing issues with the underground plumbing resulting in a significant leak is the reason, officials said.

"After weeks of power washing, then painting the pool, the pool was initially filled, and then a mudslide (due to the heavy rains) required the pool to be drained and then refilled," the town said. "However, the water level could not be maintained. The source of the leak has been elusive and caused the town to hire outside leak detection companies."

Additionally, town staff, working seven days a week, had to excavate the area around the filtration center.

While the staff's work was initially ahead of schedule, the leak could not be detected until the pool was full and that could not have been accomplished until the pool was fully painted and restored, officials said.

"We know how important our pool is to our residents, and we will do all we can to remedy this problem as soon as possible," the town said.
