Retiring Deputy Town Clerk Honored by Town Board
Deputy Town Clerk Rene Bracken was honored at the Dec. 13 Town Board meeting for 24 years of dedication to the community.
Heartfelt tears were shed for Deputy Town Clerk Rene Bracken, who is retiring this year, at the Cortlandt Town Board meeting last night. Bracken was hired as an account clerk in 1988 and was promoted from that position to senior account clerk and then deputy town clerk in 2007. She will retire Jan. 20, 2012.
Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi recognized Bracken for her hard work and dedication to the community, but also for her very creative and artistic abilities.Puglisi said she hopes Bracken will visit.
"Well, I will have to come in to pay my taxes," Bracken joked.

Town Clerk JoAnn Dyckman told Bracken she will be sorely missed.
“You have been a dedicated employee and the best deputy I could have ever aske for. I am going to miss you like you don’t know,” Dyckman said.

Hugs were exchanged and Bracken thanked the town for their kind words.

Also during the Dec. 13 Cortlandt Town Board meeting:
- Puglisi updated the town on the Lafayette Avenue construction. She said it will probably take about eight to ten months and Con Edison is currently working on utility polls. “It will be finalized in 2012.”
- The Department of Environmental Services is still cleaning up from Irene and the October snowstorm. The board has authorized overtime for town workers to continue clearing debris on Saturdays through December.
- Puglisi pointed out a new plaque and photos of town supervisors hung on the back wall of the meeting room. Plaques with the names of town board members since 1930 were also added.
- The board honored former town clerk (1962-1965 and 1976-1997) Harriet L. Boyle, long time DES employee James Conklin and former town employee Nick Criniti Jr., all of who passed in the last few weeks. Rosemary Boyle Lasher thanked the town board for their sympathy, love and support in honoring her mother, Harriet Boyle’s memory.
- Dawn Mahoney was appointed as Director of the Office for the Aging
- A public hearing was scheduled for Jan. 24, 2012 to consider merging the Recreation and Conservation Department and office for the Aging.
- Councilman Frank Farrell reported that he is excited for the boat launch to be installed at the former Martin property, which the town now owns. “It will be a good amenity for the community,” he said. At first the boat launch will be for small boats and have limited use, but it will grow and improve in the future.
- Councilman John Sloan commented on the Town’s “20 by 12,” initiative to bcome more energy efficient. He said not all goals were reached, mainly because of the recession and the need to allocate resources differently. Sloan said the town has an industrious program to tackle the goals and will get it done.
- Supervisor Puglisi announced that the town is working on building the basketball court that local girls asked for on Young Street; the boat launch and the veteran’s park that local veterans asked for.
- The Town authorized the transfer of $280,000 from the fund balance in the highway funds to cover the costs of contractors, snow removal and debris removal due to Hurricane Irene and the October snowstorm. Puglisi said they are still hoping to receive FEMA funds for their expenses.
